Traveling to Mexico? Be Sure to Understand the New Travel Requirements

Filed under: Travel Portal — admin @ 5:22 pm

Making plans to travel to Mexico this year? Is a Mexico family vacation in your future, or are you looking to take a little time for rest and relaxation on the sandy white beaches of Cancun or Puerto Vallarta? Well, your timing is right. It promises to be another fantastic year south of the border for all of the major Mexico resort hot spots! In fact, 16 million Americans will probably visit Mexico this year.

Be sure you are prepared before you travel, as there have been some new requirements issued by the U.S. State Department. Although it’s a minor change from prior travel requirements, it affects all U.S. citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. Essentially, all that is required is a passport, which most frequent travelers have anyway. The goal? To make it safer for you and to strengthen United States border security.

Here are some important facts you should know:

•The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States.

•In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines.

•The proposed timeline will be as follows:

December 31, 2006 – Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

December 31, 2007 – Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.

The Easy Way to get a Passport

First, when applying for a passport, make sure you allow enough time! It typically takes 6 weeks to process a passport application. Where can you apply for a passport? The State Department provides a handy search tool to help you find the Passport Acceptance Facility nearest you. What’s the busiest time for passport processing? Usually between January and July. Of course, if you have an emergency and need to travel to Mexico right away, the State Dept does offer some options. Go to their website at http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html, or call the U.S. National Passport Information Center: 1-877-4USA-PPT

Additional Tips for Travel to Mexico

•Be sure to leave your travel itinerary and passport information with a friend or relative in case the originals are lost. It can also be helpful to carry a copy of your travel documents with you in a separate location from the originals.
•Avoid traveling with large amounts of cash. Credit cards are widely accepted and most areas visited by tourist will have an ATM machine. These are great options because they are safe, convenient and you get a favorable exchange rate. Another option is to use traveler’s checks.
•Using a fanny pack or travelers wallet for your cash and passport is a great idea.
•While they are making great strides in improving the water quality throughout Mexico, it is advisable to drink bottled water. In addition, avoid drinking beverages over ice as the ice may have been made from tap water.
•Wash vegetables and fruits in a purifying solution of some type.
•Before leaving, check with your health insurance provider so that you are aware of your coverage.
•If you are planning to drive over the border be sure to obtain a temporary import permit and all the necessary insurance.

So now that you’ve been informed, what are you waiting for? Mexico is a land of incredible beauty and natural wonder! Whether you’re going to sunny Cancun, festive Acapulco, or even Puerto Vallarta, your perfect Mexican vacation getaway is just a flight away!

Galway City: What You Should Know

Filed under: Travel Portal — admin @ 11:38 am

Known as na Gaillimhe in Irish (“City of Galway”) Galway City is located in County Galway in the West of Ireland. With a population of over 65,000 people, Galway is relatively small compared to the other Irish cities; however what it lacks in size it more than makes up for with character. Galway is very accessible from all over Ireland whether it is by road, rail or air.

The city of Galway can be traced back to 1124 when Dn Bun na Gaillimhe (“Fort at the Mouth of the Gaillimh”) was constructed. During the 1230s Galway was captured by the Anglo Norman Richard Mor de Burgh. During the Middle Ages Galway was a very important port town, particularly for trade coming form Spain and France. The city also had the miss-fortune to be captured by Cromwell until the city fell into the hands of the Williamites. The city declined into ruin and did not really recover until the beginning of the 20th century when economic prosperity returned.

Galway has a rich tradition in Irish culture in its main three forms, Irish music, the Irish language and Irish dancing. Much of this richness of culture is due its location in close proximity to a nearby Gealtach (Irish speaking area.) If you are interested in Irish Music, many pubs will have traditional music at least once a week in Galway.

The center of Galway is more or less built surrounding Eire Square which has recently been renovated. Often referred to as the ‘city of pubs,’ Galway’s Eire Square is surrounded by Pubs and the compulsory fast food multiples. The night life here is second to none, and it is not unusual for people from all over Ireland to visit Galway to enjoy the nightlife.

Galway is a city of two parts with the second being Salthill, a coastal resort which is famous for bumper cars and slot machines. It is not as tacky as it could be, and today Salthill has evolved into a more balanced offering with restaurants, cafes and bars along side a few remaining fun emporiums.

What really marks Galway out from the other cities in Ireland are the streets in and around the center of Galway which are cobble stoned and and soaked in history. There are fantastic shops and bars along these streets and it is easy to spend an afternoon ambling around shopping and drinking coffee. If you are visiting Ireland, a visit to Galway is an absolute must.

Regus Profits up by a Quarter

Filed under: Graphics + Design, Managing Life + Business, Markets — admin @ 9:08 am

The office rental firm, Regus, has reported a 25% increase in its profits last year due to companies preferring to take out leases on their premises rather than buying them.

Pre-tax profits of the company have reached a record £150m, a dramatic increase over its previous year’s profits of £120m. Company revenues have also risen by 25% to a total of £1.08bn.

The company has said that the increasing instances of companies renting their workplaces is because of the recession, since it is better for their cash flow that all the costs involved of buying new premises. In addition, the company’s share prices have increased by 80% over the previous year.

The business model of the company has attracted some criticisms in the past, since it takes out its own long term rental contracts and sublets them on shorter term agreements to companies. This has, however, become increasingly popular in recent times. If you’re considering a change of premises, Claremont can offer a complete and customised commercial and office relocation, move management and reconfiguration service.

Regus chief executive has described 2008 as a fifth consecutive year of record turnover and profit.

During times of recession, more and more firms are starting to rent their workspace, many having decided to sell their own properties, moving into leased ones instead.

Asian growth has reported nearly 115 new premises opened up in 2008 and the number of workstations has risen to over 150,000. Revenues in Asia have risen by over 55% with the opening of new centres in Pakistan and Taiwan. UK revenues have risen by almost seven percent.

Cancun: Your Gateway to the Mayan Riviera

Filed under: Travel Portal — admin @ 12:29 am

Cancun, with its ancient and noble Mayan splendor, sits boastfully with its fist held high in the air, towards the end of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. This made to order tourist venue is frequented by millions of sun seeking vacation goers each and every year. With its powdery white, coral sand beaches, an average of 240 sun bestowing days a year, and an endless array of sites and activities, it is no wonder that this location is one of the most sought after travel destinations in the world.

The actual date of Cancun’s inception varies depending upon whom you query. Sometime around the late 1960’s to the mid 1970’s, the Mexican Tourist Board decided that a world-class tourist destination was needed to boost the income of foreign dollars for Mexico’s lingering economy. Construction ensued and boost it did. With an average tourist population totaling over two million visitors a year, Cancun and the Mayan Riviera quickly became one of the most frequented vacation spots on the planet.

In the native Mayan tongue, the name Cancun means Golden Snake. And like a serpent slithering out of the lush jungles of the Yucatan, this vacation play ground winds its way through the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea for over 14 miles (22.4 km), leaving in its wake some of the most spectacular beaches the world has ever seen.

This narrow strip of land that is the hotel zone, is packed with over 25,000 hotel rooms, shopping malls, an endless array of restaurants, and last but certainly not least, some of the most spectacular and energetic nightlife venues that party seekers have ever been witness to.

Out of a necessity to house the workers of the hotel zone and the many amenities this tourist Mecca demanded, downtown Cancun was born.

The downtown area has developed its own unique flair and enticing personality. This area is lively and jam-packed with street side markets, restaurants, and vendors galore just begging to be haggled with. The downtown area has a feel all its own. If you are seeking an atmosphere varying from that of the touristy hotel zone, this area will likely satisfy your desire for variety.

For the adventurous at heart, this region is a gold mine with much to see and do. Just a few miles north of Cancun’s shoreline sits the ancient Mayan island of Isla Mujeres. With its narrow downtown streets being paved in sand and cobblestone and its landscape spotted with homes painted in tones of pinks, blues, turquoises, and yellows, Isla Mujeres boasts its own unique charm with a Mexican and Caribbean flair. A short jaunt down the Mayan Riviera coastline will reveal a wealth of adventure in the form of quaint and offbeat, seaside villages that have been lost to time. In the likes of Puerto Morelos, Akumal, and Tankah, you will find the bartering value of your timepiece, has diminished greatly.

As if there needs to be more to entice a vacationer, this area hosts one of the best scuba diving locales the world has ever been privy to in Cozumel. Cozumel and the Mayan Riviera are home to the second largest barrier reef in the world…second only to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. This reef stretches through the warm Caribbean waters in spectacular fashion all the way from the Yucatan to Costa Rica!…and oh yes, we can’t forget to mention the many Mayan ruins just waiting to be explored, such as the majestic Chichen Itza, the ancient site of Coba, and the spectacular seaside site of Tulum.

The absolute beauty of this region is the fact that just around the corner, there lies something that will appeal to everybody!

So, if you ever find yourself in the neighborhood, leave your worries and cares at the curbside, grab your favorite beverage from the local beachside bar, pull up the nearest palm, and enjoy everything that is Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Cultural Tourism in Tanzania

Filed under: Travel Portal — admin @ 3:29 pm

There is a problem with spontaneous cultural tourism; that is it must be organized and as soon as this is done…well, sadly the cultural visit is no longer worth doing. To experience true culture; to have that genuine experience; it should be done slowly over a day or maybe two. It cannot be done in a morning or squeezed into a couple of hours one afternoon before you race off to the Serengeti.

So, should you as a tourist just not bother with the Cultural addition to the safari? I would say an emphatic yes, just don’t bother; it is not worth the effort! Especially so if your cultural visit is rushed, half hearted, over organized and created for the tourist.

However, I think if you come all the way to East Africa, you need to see more than the animals. Tanzania is about so much more. Tanzania cannot be rushed. To rush involves missing what is hidden just under the surface; you will experience Tanzania in black and white only. You would be better served visiting the local zoo; it would be a lot cheaper too.

If you don’t have time to spend living in a village; or maybe you fear your constitution is not quite up to eating fried chicken feet and boiled grass; or you just don’t have the time; I would suggest you go for a short expeditionary sojourn around the village or town. Take a local person with you, the hotel or lodge or tour operator will provide someone. Explain you want to see village life and not the tourist attractions. This may not be as easy as it sounds. Your guide may not perceive at first that you want to see Tanzania in all its unattractive poverty.

Walking around the village in Tengeru or on Kilimanjaro or a suburb of Dar, Mbeya or Arusha can be done in half a day and you can meet real Tanzanian people and see how people live. This is as long as you stay away from the ‘traditional blacksmith” in fact as a general rule of thumb it may be a good idea to stay away from the contrived traditional anything.

Another, less strenuous, way of receiving a good condensed slice of culture is to visit a local bar for lunch. Choose an attractive open plan bar with a thatch roof – so you are able to watch life pass by. Get your recently acquired guide to order some roast goat, some roast beef and some roast banana’s and enjoy soaking in the culture whilst you wait for the meal to arrive. Don’t eat any salad or fruit that may accompany the meal in respect for your stomach. If you are not so hungry order chips mayai [chips my-eye] which is a chip omelet – and very nice it is too!

Even better would be to take a day or more to walk in a remote village accompanied by your guide. Take it slowly and stop to talk with the local community. Some of the locals may know a little English and they will want to try it out and practice with you. Those who don’t will appreciate and encourage you [sometimes with great hoots of laughter] any attempts you make to communicate in Swahili. Your meals and overnight can be spent with a local family.

The cultural safari adds another dimension to your visit. You will now be on your way to becoming to know Tanzania just a little. Africa is a wonderful place and Tanzania is a most peaceful destination. Many agents claim that various countries and peoples are warm and welcoming; however this is true of Tanzania. I have lived in may countries in Sub-Sahara Africa and Tanzania’s truly love to receive visitors. So… welcome to Tanzania and above all relax and enjoy this vast and special land.

Budget travel in an RV

Filed under: Travel Portal — admin @ 4:04 am

The sales of recreational vehicles have really been on fire lately, as more and more people discover the high level of freedom, and low level of cost, that an RV vacation can provide. As air travel becomes more of a hassle, and the cost of hotel stays continues to rise, many people are discovering the convenience of taking their hotel room with them wherever they go.

The attraction of a recreational vehicle, of course, is that it provides the budget traveler with the freedom to go where he or she wants, whenever they want to go there. An RV frees the traveler on a budget from rigid schedules, lines at airport security, restrictions on luggage, and so much more. And with over 15,000 RV parks and campgrounds dotting the country, there is bound to be one wherever you want to go.

And many RV’s have all the amenities of home, including living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms. Many RV’s also have rooms that slide out to provide even more living space when the vehicle is parked.

There are some important tips for first time RV’ers to follow to get the biggest bang for their travel buck. Some of our favorite tips for a low cost and hassle free RV trip include:

 Hit the web for tons of free information on living the RV lifestyle and keeping costs under control. There are a great many web sites and newsgroups dedicated to recreational vehicles, and they can provide valuable tips for those newcomers.

 Try renting an RV before you buy one. The purchase of a recreational vehicle is a big decision, and one that is likely to have a major impact on your lifestyle, especially on how you vacation. With the average RV costing as much as the average house did a couple of decades ago, it is important to know that an RV is the right decision before taking the plunge. There are a number of places that rent RV’s, and these rental agencies can provide a low cost alternative to RV ownership, or a way to “try it before you buy it”.

 Do your research. If you do decide to buy an RV, be sure to research the buyer’s guides, and read the reviews on the internet. Doing so will allow you to get the most RV for your money.

 Visit a couple of RV dealers, and attend an RV show. RV shows are great ways to see a wide range of models quickly, and it is often possible to strike some very good deals at these events.

 Do the math to be sure an RV is right for you. An RV makes sense for a great many people, particularly families traveling together. RV travel can be significantly less costly than travel by car or plane. Fees for campgrounds are considerably lower than hotel room rates, and this can really trim the travel budget.

 Be sure to inset in a quality guide to RV campgrounds. Knowing where the campgrounds are, and having good directions for getting there, will save you lots of hassle, as well as gas money.

Stress Management for the Holiday Traveler

Filed under: Travel Portal — admin @ 10:06 pm

I’m flying in a few days from California to Michigan. Altogether, door to door, it will be twelve hours worth of travel. I’ve seen the TV news in the past about the long lines and rude people.

This year I’m going to be prepared! It’s not going to ruin my holiday. This year I know what to expect and how to handle it.

Flight

I fly at least eight times per year for my job and I admit the first few times were nerve wracking. I remember my first flight in the 80’s and I was almost panicking. Now I take a window seat and meditate on how beautiful the world is from 3000 feet. I’m not religious but it’s hard to deny your spirituality when viewing something so beautiful.

Meditation

I have a ritual that I use to cope and it may help you as well. The previous meditation is part of it. I sit quietly and feel the plane leaving ground. I concentrate on the sensations. I experience the butterflies in my stomach instead of fighting it. I wait for the familiar feeling of getting pushed back in my seat from the pressure of the plane increasing speed. I watch the ground getting farther and farther away. It’s exhilirating!

Prayer

I’m also no different than most – I find renewed interest in God during flight. I pray. That’s not meant to be disrespectful in any way, it’s just a part of human nature. I thank him for allowing us to have something so beautiful to live in and when you think about it, we won’t be any closer in this life than at that point.

Breathing

I also concentrate on my breathing. I keep it relaxed and controlled while the plane is in it’s ascent. I actually count to myself one…two…three inhale. One…two…three exhale. It induces the relaxation response and puts an end to that fight or flight syndrome that I previously experienced during take off.

Long Lines

I’m mentally preparing myself for the hustle and bustle of travel. I realize there will be crying children, stressed parents, weary businessmen and lonely students. There will be overworked security personnel, airline agents and rental car employees.

Kill Them With Kindness

I’m convinced at this moment that I will respond with kindness to those that are losing their patience. I will offer help when I can and be tolerant when I can’t. Counting down the hours to my destination will help. At 3pm when someone has just reamed me, I know that in three hours I’ll be home and it won’t matter.

Organization

I’ll keep my drivers license in the little “goes around my neck” American Tourister organizer for fast identification. I’ll pack my laptop so that it’s easy to unpack for security. I’ll allow enough extra time for check in so that I won’t be in such a hurry and worse – miss my plane. I’ll wear slip on shoes that I can take off easily.

I hope a few of these ideas will be helpful to you as well. If you are traveling, remember why we chose to go home during these last few days before the holiday.

At this point, if you’re feeling like I am, I would tolerate almost anything to be home. We can handle this. Small price to pay to have family near.
